Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter (softened)
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 3/4 cup light brown sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 tbsp gel red food coloring
- Powdered sugar (for rolling)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
- In a bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.
- In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until fluffy.
- Beat in eggs one at a time and add vanilla extract.
- Mix in red food coloring until well combined.
- Gradually add dry ingredients until just incorporated; do not overmix.
- Chill dough for at least an hour in plastic wrap to prevent spreading.
- Scoop tablespoon-sized balls of dough, roll in powdered sugar, and place on baking sheets about two inches apart.
- Bake for 10 minutes or until set but soft in the center; allow cooling on wire racks.
Notes
- Chilling the dough is crucial to prevent the cookies from spreading too much while baking.
- Feel free to adjust the amount of food coloring for a deeper red.
